Indifference
The work consists of two elements: the sound installation ‘Operation on an Open Conscience’ and the object ‘Stepping into the Skin’. In them, I diagnose the existence of an epidemic of indifference, which manifests itself as a lack of sensitivity to the suffering, needs and feelings of others. Life, particularly in a big city, involves constantly learning to ignore various stimuli, to distance oneself, and to be insensitive. Drawing on my personal history, I expose the phenomenon of insensitivity, whilst encouraging the viewer to reflect on their own behaviour in the face of violence. The sounds emanating from the speaker are fragments of speech – recordings of my loved ones answering the question (which I was ultimately unable to ask directly) of why they never reacted, knowing that my father was violent towards the family. Microscope slides – samples imitating bruises – placed against the body allow for a symbolic entry into the skin of a person experiencing violence
