Community
The work resembles a pile – the arrangement in which wood is stacked for a bonfire. The individual elements of the object, however, are made of ceramics: a material created through firing, yet not being able to maintain fire itself. Some of them are arranged in the shape of a hashtag symbol. The work explores the idea of community, the sense of being part of a larger whole – a seemingly timeless survival strategy based on creating and strengthening bonds between people. I am interested in how differently this has been and is being realised throughout history. Do contemporary forms of uniting offer the same qualities as the original ones?
