Temporary Shelter
“«Afforestation of Institutions (quercus)», Museum in the Underground, 2023, oak seedling, soil
A living work of art that takes shape through a process initiated by the Museum in the Underground. It is a seedling grown from an acorn found beneath one of the oak trees planted in Kassel by Joseph Beuys – as part of the ‘documenta 7’ exhibition. Thanks to the initiative launched by the German artist between 1982 and 1987, 7,000 oak trees were planted throughout the city, with a basalt stone placed beside each one. Beuys situated this action in relation to his own theory of social sculpture, based on the premise that everything within the scope of human activity can be considered art, and that creativity is capable of stimulating tangible social change.”
Description of the Museum in the Underground
The work was commissioned by the Museum in the Underground and forms part of the project ‘Afforestation of Institutions (quercus)’. It serves as a temporary shelter for an acorn that has sprouted a young shoot. The planter was created by combining two materials – clay and basalt. It imitates the stones of Kassel.
