Portraits of Women from Wrocław: Kathe Kruse, Ellen Malchen and Eva Siwert

“«Women of Wrocław – A Herstory and Art Book» is one of the few publications in the history of Wrocław devoted solely to women. They lived in different periods. Germans and Poles. Catholics, Protestants, Jews. Heteronormative and non-heteronormative women. They were artists, social activists, doctors, scientists, sportswomen, entrepreneurs. Wives, partners, mothers. Some of them became emigrants or refugees. In a male-dominated world, they managed to fight for their place, break social taboos, pursue education despite bans on studying, and stand up to the Nazis. Their biographies reflect important social aspects and the slow process of women’s emancipation in a patriarchal society. The women featured in the book are from Wrocław. They are connected to the city in many ways. Each of the women mentioned contributed to the development of Wrocław, and some brought it international fame.”
