I’ll Have Everything. Twice

The work and its title were inspired by a text by slam poet Justyna Oleksy. It’s a critical commentary on contemporary culture of insatiability, in which greed becomes the main driving force behind actions, and consumption – the meaning of existence. The title phrase – brazen and greedy – reflects the mechanism of taking more than we are able to carry.

The rhetorical device used here – epizeuxis – involves the direct, immediate repetition of the same word or short phrase (often twice, i.e. ‘doubly’, but it can be more). It serves to heighten emotion and magnify the drama. I interpret this as a tendency towards exaggeration, a way of reinforcing the request and emphasising its insistence, adding rhythm and emotional intensity that cause confusion. For can one really ask for everything twice?
